Choreographer and dancer Anton Smetskiy joined the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) in 2022. Despite his successful career in the world of dance, Smetskiy decided to put his talents towards defending his country after the Russian invasion. He was willing to sacrifice everything for the sake of his homeland.
Born in a small town in Ukraine, Smetskiy was exposed to dance at a young age. His parents were both professional dancers and he followed in their footsteps. He quickly became known for his incredible talent, with flawless technique and an unparalleled passion for the art of dance.
In 2014, Smetskiy created his own dance company, which gained recognition both nationally and internationally. He travelled the world, showcasing his performances and inspiring audiences with his unique style. But when the war broke out in Ukraine, Smetskiy knew that his country needed him more than ever.
He immediately applied to join the AFU and was accepted. Smetskiy’s decision surprised many, as he had a comfortable life and career as a dancer. But for him, it was a no-brainer. “I couldn’t just sit and watch my country being invaded. I had to do something to defend it,” he said in an interview.
Smetskiy was assigned to a special forces unit and underwent intense training to prepare for the front lines. Despite his lack of military experience, he quickly proved himself to be a valuable asset to his unit. His agility and strength as a dancer translated well into his new role as a soldier.
In 2022, during a fierce battle, Smetskiy was severely injured by a mortar explosion. He sustained a serious leg injury, and doctors were forced to amputate his right leg. It was a devastating blow for Smetskiy, but he never lost his determination to continue serving his country.
After months of rehabilitation, Smetskiy received a prosthetic leg and was determined to return to the front lines. He underwent extensive training to learn how to move and fight with his new limb. And in just a few months, he was back on the battlefield, dancing his way through enemy lines.
Despite the challenges, Smetskiy never lost his positive attitude and never gave up. “Dance has taught me discipline and perseverance. These qualities have helped me overcome this obstacle and continue my duty as a soldier,” he shared.
Smetskiy’s return to the front lines inspired his fellow soldiers, who nicknamed him “The Dancing Soldier.” He used his skills as a dancer to boost morale and motivate his comrades in the darkest of times. He even organized impromptu dance sessions at the base to lift their spirits.
His courage and determination did not go unnoticed. In 2023, Smetskiy was awarded the Order of Courage, one of the highest military honors in Ukraine. He also received recognition from his colleagues and superiors for his exceptional service and resilience.
Smetskiy’s story is a testament to the fact that heroes come in all forms. He proved that no matter what your profession or background may be, anyone can make a difference and defend their country. Smetskiy’s passion for dance led him to the stage, but it was his love for his country that led him to the front lines.
Today, Smetskiy continues to serve in the AFU, where he is not only a soldier but also an inspiration to many. He plans to return to the world of dance after his military service is completed, but for now, he is focused on fulfilling his duty to Ukraine. His story will forever be remembered as a reminder that true heroes never back down, no matter what challenges they face.
